Debate: Animal Testing

Posted by Mandy at 7:39 AM
Your debate question for the week is:

Is it morally acceptable to use animals for experimental testings for things like vaccinations, new medications, make-up, etc.?

Yes. 100%.

I think being intentionally inhumane is wrong, but I do feel animal testing is necessary.

People may be surprised.. but I agree with you, Shelley.

I think animal testing is a horrible necessity. I would probably not agree with EVERY animal testing experiment done, but I do think many are needed.

I also agree that they should not be intentionally inhumane. It pains me to know that many animals like dogs, rabbits, pigs, etc are constantly caged and have no real lives. I don't understand why this is the case.. why they must be tortured with experimental drugs and such and also never be allowed to sniff a tree or feel the affection of a human.

100% the right thing to do. We need it to ensure our own future and the future of all our animal companions and wildlife.

As for this comment: "It pains me to know that many animals like dogs, rabbits, pigs, etc are constantly caged and have no real lives. I don't understand why this is the case.. why they must be tortured with experimental drugs and such and also never be allowed to sniff a tree or feel the affection of a human."

It saddens me that someone who would otherwise be oin the side of animal testing is put off by the reluctance of companys to show you just what goes on in their facilities. Dogs are played with every day as part of their daily regime, so are primates, they are group housed, they have toys. Rodents and rabbits have large cages and are group housed where the animals like it (rats) or alone if they dont (hamsters). The VAST majority of animal technicians care for and love their animals and show genuine affection for them.
We love our beasts and are always sad when something happens to them. We make their lives as comfortable as possible.
What we do is necessary.

Interesting... I am happy to hear that there are testing facilities that are good to the animals.

I do know, from being so involved with dog rescue, that there are numerous dogs that are euthanized after being in research facilities because of there very severe fear of humans. If they were indeed properly handled, they would not be in such distress.

Having said that, again, truly happy to hear that there are good people out there that are not only doing our pets and US a wealth of good by conducting animal testing, but are also animal lovers themselves and do all they can to make them happy.
